"I will never leave you nor forsake you." Hebrews 13:5

Dear Friends,

Arriving at an institution to begin a federal sentence and then much later leaving prison to go to the street are both times (among others) that present unique challenges for inmates.

Coming into the system is a scary experience.  Most men grapple with anxiety regarding their personal safety and fear of the unknown. Our monthly chapel service at the Assessment Unit where they first arrive gives us exposure to these men. Apprehension is written all over them in their quietness and stoic faces. We count it a privilege to be the hands and voice of Jesus to share His love for them. They can know His presence and strength in the darkness of their prison journey. The gospel works in their environment.

Much later, but equally frightening can be their release from prison. Some have served only a short sentence of 2 to 3 years while others have been inside for decades. Returning to "the street" has its many challenges and unknowns.

*They will need to apply and update government documents that have expired such as drivers licenses and health cards.

*They will be unable to open a bank account without current photo ID.

*They will be needing employment. What will they need to disclose and how will it affect the hiring process?

*There may be restricted travel.

*Some have family with a strong support system, others have none.

*Those who have come to faith in Jesus Christ need to find a church that will be welcoming and truly compassionate and supportive, especially when they are first so vulnerable.

They must navigate through many challenges as they endeavour to adapt and begin over again. Some have been able to calculate and plan thoughtfully and leave prison with a measure of confidence, others not so.
For most, their destination and what will actually unfold are so uncertain.

These past six months we have said goodbye to several inmates who have been released to halfway houses or directly to the street.

We are pleased for them in this achievement but we also pray earnestly for their success.
We believe the promise in Hebrews that He will never leave us or forsake us and so we pray that God would strategically and practically provide for them through the right individuals and opportunities. We desire their success spiritually but also practically as they make decisions to rebuild their lives to bring glory to God.

Thank you for praying for us and for those we care for as we serve in the prisons here in Kingston.

Blessings,
Robert & Susan
